Shirley remained fascinated by street scenes, this was her most fruitful working environment and where she felt happiest. She was interested in youth and youth culture as different fashions and cultures took root, this was evident from even her early works. Although the majority of her images are taken in the streets during day time, Shirley did occasionally venture into clubs and photograph bands on stage and young people dancing and socialising. Moving into the 70s and 80s, Shirley ventured further afield. She found a second natural home in London, loving Camden in particular, where she photographed many of the punks who would hang out around the market. From teddy boys to punks, young people and the constant shift of tribes and allegiances found a natural home in Shirley’s work.
