The Sainsbury Centre in Norwich is to feature an exhibition called Play Power, curated by Tania Moore, Head of Exhibitions. The exhibition is part of a wider event called What is the Meaning of Life?
Play Power showcases a ‘variety of manifestations of play, both past and present, ranging from board games, games of chance, physical activity, creativity, video games and make believe…’
We are delighted that the centre has selected several of Shirley Baker’s early colour photographs, taken in Hulme, Manchester, in 1965. These images capture children playing in the streets in the post-war years, a time when toys were scarce and poverty was widespread. Children and their families showed remarkable resourcefulness, making use of whatever was available to them. Playing out in the street was a central part of life in these close-knit communities, where neighbours gathered outside their homes, chatting together while keeping a watchful eye on the children at play.
Play Power takes place 16 May to 4 October at Sainsbury Centre, Norwich, Norfolk
