The Photographers’ Gallery is hosting an online exhibition of Shirley Baker’s beach works called A Trip to the Beach. The exhibition is the perfect antidote to anyone yearning for sand and sea (plus donkeys, fairground rides and ice cream).
Southport, Blackpool and North Wales all feature in a set of photographs which capture the joys of beach life in the 1960s and 70s, before the lure of foreign holidays fully took hold.
The photographs can be viewed at The Photographers’ Gallery website.
There is a portfolio of beach photography by Shirley Baker on this site, featuring work taken in Blackpool; you can also view the artist’s work from the south of France, where she had a holiday home.
